BREAKING: MD-Donna Edwards in Congress before Nov?

Wed Apr 02, 2008 at 12:05:04 PM PDT

Important development in Maryland. WaPo is reporting that:

Maryland Gov. Martin O'Malley (D) will ask the state legislature to pass emergency legislation that would allow the state to hold a special general election to replace outgoing U.S. Rep. Albert R. Wynn (D) without first holding a primary.

This is likely to happen given the Democratic composition of the Maryland legislature.  The result of this move would be three-fold.  One, Edwards will quickly replace Wynn as the Democratic Representative in Congress, which would benefit all progressive positions before Congress.  Two, Obama would likely regain the Super delegate he will lose when Wynn resigns.  Three, it will put Edwards in a favorable position regarding Committee assignments.

O'Malley said he will ask the General Assembly to make the change before the legislative session ends Monday. It would allow the winner to serve out the remainder of Wynn's term and achieve seniority over other congressional freshmen.

This is an excellent development for the progressive caucus in Congress that I hope the Maryland legislature will act on quickly.  If you live in Maryland, call you state legislator and ask them to support this legislation.
