Clinton's leaked campaign concession speech

Fri May 30, 2008 at 12:08:02 PM PDT

Apparently, an early draft of Clinton's concession speech was leaked to un-named sources.  I don't know what to think of it other than to be puzzled.

Embargoed for release, June 5th, 2008.

Once again I stand before you, having endured much in my quest for the Democratic nomination. It has not been an easy road, with unfair accusations of racism and actual acts of sexism causing division amongst well meaning Democrats. Regardless, the issues that bind all Democrats and all Americans remain the same. America is ready for universal health care. America is ready for a leader who will end the war in Iraq. America is ready for energy independence. American is ready for a government that puts competency ahead of cronyism. American is ready for comprehensive immigration reform.

But the Democratic party is not ready for a woman President.  Which brings us to this point in the campaign for the Democratic nomination for President.  First, I want to thank you, my wonderful supporters, for all of the time and assistance you have given to my campaign.  I hope you will visit my website at www.hillary clinton.com to help me pay off my campaign debt.  I could not have done it without you.

But what have I done? I won the popular vote, which includes voters in Florida and Michigan, because we must include these voters if we truly value our ideals as Democrats, though we must not include the voters from caucus states, because they are not truly democratic. I also won all of the swing states that truly matter and I won all of the important states that really matter.

**Applause and chants of "Hil-la-ry, Hil-la-ry, Hil-la-ry"**

But Senator Obama has run a good campaign.  He won states that really don't matter in the general election, except maybe Illinois, but he performed strongly in them.  He encouraged young people to come out and vote in large numbers, though we know they will never vote in the general election.  He had amazing support from the African American community, who are stolid supporters but are insufficient to win in the general election.  More importantly, he won the majority of Pledged Delegates, which is the only victory that matters to the Apartheid Democratic party.

I have therefore decided to suspend my campaign and recognize Barack Obama as the eventual Democratic nominee.

**Scattered boos with the occasional "we love you Hillary"**

I will continue to work hard for the Democratic party and I want all of you who support me to stand strong. Who knows what will happen in the coming months. Historically we know campaigns like that of my husband Bill and that of Robert Kennedy continued into the month of June. That is why I am only suspending my campaign at present. If I get that call at 3 am, I promise to step forward and answer that call as the nominee for the Democratic Party.

**Cheers and more chanting**

Though history teaches us to always be strong and remain vigilant, we do not know what the future will hold. It is time now for all of us to move forward as Democrats. Obama has the support of many Americans, including young people, African Americans, and well meaning but misguided latte drinking, Prius driving liberals. I, on the other hand, have the support of women, essential to any Democratic victory.  I also have the support of the god-fearing, gun-toting, gay hating, hard-working, white Americans that are necessary to winning in November.

As a consequence, my unbridled support for Barack Obama will be critical to his success in November.  Furthermore, I believe it is important for us to unify the Democratic party as we move forward in this election against John McCain.  We must heal the wounds our party has suffered during this very close primary contest.  Therefore, I promise to wholeheartedly support Barack Obama's candidacy for President, just as I know he will wholeheartedly support me in 2012 when I run as the Democratic nominee against President McCain.

**More cheers and chanting**

Thank you for all of your support! God bless you and God bless America!

Well it's good to see her finally throwing her support to Barack Obama, though I'm not sure this is the kind of support he was looking for.

Instead, I leave you with the following lyrical quote, dedicated to the Clinton campaign:

6 o'clock in the morning & i'm the last person in this plane still awake
Y'know I can almost smell the blood
washing against the shores,
Of this land that can't forget its past.
Oh the wind that carries this plane, is the wind of change,
heaven sent and hell bent!
over the mountain tops we go, just like all the other GI Joes

EE-AY-EE-AY----adios!

This is your captain calling--"with an urgent warning"
We're above the Gulf of Arabia--"our altitude is falling"
& I can't hold her up--"there's no time for thinking"
All hands on deck--"this bird is sinking"
